We accept change so easily and adapt to new innovations so eagerly that it seems
almost impossible to imagine that there was a time in our recent past when the
personal computer and cell phone did not exist. Not only have these new technologies
revolutionized the way we work and communicate, they also have transformed the way
scientists and researchers delve into the mysteries of human health.
These new technologies made it possible for researchers to map the human genome
during the 1990s, and with that breakthrough, exciting new frontiers in medicine were
created. High-tech is on the verge of bringing health care to a whole new level, as
researchers work on developing everything from artificial lungs and retinas to an online
medicine cabinet that may someday bring the diagnostic functions of your doctor’s
office into your home.
The opportunities in research and the life sciences have never been more robust. Cities,
states and regions are fully engaged in seeking to leverage their life sciences assets
to create sustainable, competitive viability for their communities. Our region is no
different. The state of Kansas has aggressively pursued a strategy to make our state a
great place to start and grow bioscience ventures.
An outstanding academic medical center is vital to any strategy that seeks to enhance
our competitive position and, more importantly, enhance the quality of life and health
of those who call the Heartland home. Many respected voices are now saying that
investment in the University of Kansas Medical Center is the best way for this region to
build its brightest tomorrow.
In this issue of
39th + Rainbow, The Life Sciences Issue, we hope to shed some light
on how the life sciences are changing our world by sharing with you the stories of
the dedicated leaders and talented researchers who work every day at the University
of Kansas Medical Center to advance human health and, in the process, drive the
transformation of our regional economy.
I sincerely hope you enjoy this second issue of
39th + Rainbow. We are already hard
at work on our next issue, which will explore our continued commitment to health
education. In the meantime, we would love to hear your comments and feedback on
the magazine.
